Friday 14th January – walk ***** – Holywells Park and Ipswich waterfront – sunny, still and mild.

The run of fantastic winter weather continues, if the wind is not going to blow then all days should be lie this! After a morning at home, we decided to go for a change of scenery by taking our picnic over to the lovely Holywells Park in Ipswich for a spot of bird watching. We park in our usual spot and enter the park at 12.45 at the entrance by Ipswich docks spotting a Magpie straight away. We follow the small duck weed covered stream to the first lake, not many birds here, just some coots, Moorhens and gulls, there is a thin covering of ice too. Ipswich has some great parks and this one used to be the grounds of a large house which is sadly long gone with just the stables and impressive orangery left but there is a fine selection of massive trees which the squirrels were making the most of. We explored some paths we have not used before with several small birds flitting about, we heard a woodpecker too but did not see it:( We then headed down to a seat by the middle lake for our yummy salad and were entertained by a man feeding the excited gulls both Blackheaded and Mediterranean, plus a few ducks including a cute all white one, then when things quietened down the robin appeared and a very friendly rat! Well rested we set off down to Ipswich water front to make the most of the sunshine and light airs despite the fact that my right heel is really playing up, definitely time to give the Doctor a ring! With the sun dropping behind the old cranes and the marina like a mill pool it was just lovely with superb reflections everywhere. It was not too crowded as we walked to Stoke Bridge, some roller bladders, dog walkers and people in the bars enjoying a meal or drink. With the sun now setting we returned to the van and drove over to Levington Marina to catch the sunset which was lovely, bumping into windsurfing mate Jamie who we haven’t see for a bit and had a nice chat before heading home for a welcome cuppa and cake:)
It has been a fantastic week enjoying the best that Suffolk has to offer, walking or biking in the winter sun, having fun in Felixstowe, Hemley, Falkenham and Ipswich, just so lucky to live here:)

PS - got my first pic in the local paper today, its been a very slow start to the year:(
